Partner since 1993, he has ample experience representing clients before local, state, and federal courts in matters related to banking, insurance, commercial, contract disputes, distributors, torts, and malpractice litigation. Has devoted a considerable part of his practice to the representation of insurance companies in cases involving fraudulent claims. In 1997, he successfully represented Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company in the case of Nationwide v. Orlando Otero, et. als. filed before the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. This civil action constituted the first time an insurance company in Puerto Rico filed a RICO Act claim against a well-organized fraud scheme involving over one hundred defendants including insurance agents, adjusters, and police officers. Subsequently he acted as lead counsel representing nine insurance companies in another RICO Act civil case filed in the Federal District Court in Puerto Rico against 292 defendants. He currently counsels numerous insurance companies to pursue litigation in fraud related issues. Before joining the firm, Mr. Barreto-Solá worked in several Washington D.C. law firms, including Martin, Bodley & Kraft, LLP, where he obtained valuable experience in immigration and labor law. Was appointed by Washington D.C’s Mayor Sharon Pratt Dixon as Vice-Chairman of the Commission of Latino Community Development where he acted as liaison between the Hispanic community and the Office of the Mayor. He continued his public service and was subsequently appointed Panel Chairman of the Washington, DC Civilian Complaint Review Board where he served as chair of a panel in charge of reviewing citizen allegations of harassment and excessive use of force by District of Columbia police officers. Mr. Barreto has served as speaker in numerous seminars related to insurance fraud, including the International Seminar of Insurance Fraud offered in Colombia by the “Instituto Nacional de Investigación, Lucha y Prevención de Fraude of the Universidad Externado de Colombia”.
